Fehling's reagent consists of two separate solutions with different densities: Fehling’s Solution No1 (contains copper(II) ions and is deep blue) has a density of approximately 1.06g/ml

 

. Fehling’s Solution No2 is more dense,approx 1.23g/ml

Test Method

1. Preparation: Combine equal volumes of freshly prepared Fehling's Solution A and Solution B in a test tube.
2. Add Sample: Add the test sample (e.g., sugar solution) to the mixture.
3. Heating: Heat the mixture in a water bath for 1–2 minutes.
4. Observation: A positive test is indicated by the appearance of a brick-red precipitate. 

5. The net reaction between an aldehyde and the copper(II) ions in Fehling's solution may be written as:

   RCHO (reducing sugar)+  2Cu2+  +5OH−⟶RCOO− +Cu2O (brick red coloured precipitate)+3H2O
6. Only aldehydes react and are oxidised to acid. There is no reaction with a ketone, so the test distinguishes between aldehydes and ketones.
